Keep the lines of communication open
Keep the lines of communication open
Communication with the person you’re caring for is key, and remember, it goes both ways. Not only should you be careful to articulate shared goals, you should be able to listen to his desires and fears as well. Compassion and understanding are as important to him as any other part of the treatment. And if he is not yet able to discuss his needs, be patient. Let him know you’ll be ready when he’s ready.
Good communication also means being able to discuss issues with members of his health team openly and intelligently. Be sure to stay in close contact with his doctors, and return calls and e-mails promptly.
