Hormone Suppression Therapy
What is Hormone Suppression Therapy?
This is a type of treatment that helps reduce prostate cancer cells' ability to use the hormone testosterone to grow. The goal of hormonal therapy is to make the prostate cancer either grow more slowly or shrink in order to treat the symptoms of prostate cancer.
Important facts about hormone suppression therapy
- Hormone suppression therapy is not a cure but can provide symptom relief.
- Hormones can be suppressed by orchiectomy or medicine.
- One treatment option is androgen deprivation therapy (ADT), which treats the symptoms of the disease. ADT is not a cure. Drugs called Gonadotropin releasing hormone agonists (GnRH) are one type of ADT, which works by decreasing the amount of testosterone that the body makes. This decrease in testosterone can slow the growth of prostate cancer cells.
